What to wear while JOB HUNTING!

2009 July 2

So, as I continue my job hunt as a broke graduate student, I often notice the apparel that my fellow job hunters are wearing. I have seen everything from jeans and flip flops to wool blazers and boots (in 90 degree weather!). I am sure that many of us have been taught that when one is searching for a job or going on an interview that they must have a full suit on. Business casual is usually the way to go, but your outfit can also coordinate with the type of position that you are applying for.

America is the nation for Sportswear! With companies like Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, and Express, they make buying separates for an interview super amazing! Liz Claiborne, which began her business in the late 70’s, changed the way that women had to appear in the work place. She made mixing and matching the new black suit. So lets go on this Job Safari together:

combine your favorite dress with a basic blazer

Interview for Retail:

When having an interview for a retail position, it is essential to research the company by going to the store and visiting their website. If the place that you are trying out for is a very casual environment, I suggest wearing a blazer with a button down shirt which can be paired with dark navy denim, or a clean fitting black slack. If the company is a designer store with high end prices, it would be best to wear a fashion forward suit.

Interview for a Corporate Environment:

SUIT! SUIT! SUIT! I can not stress more than ever to wear a suit to a corporate interview. Whether it be for an entertainment job or a financial job, the rules of the game is to wear a suit. Now there are an array of suits out there! You do not have to wear the same boring suit. For a fashion related corporate job, it will benefit you to wear a suit that is fashion forward with a pop of color! The next step in choosing the best suit is the fit. Slacks should never be tight to the point where one can identify your favorite Victoria Secrets find. The perfect suit should fit you as if it was tailored for your body type. This is where mixing bottoms and tops come in. Many designers offer a similar color palette for suits each season. If a blazer in one store is perfect, but the slacks or skirt is not, then go to another company!
