Do You Swap??
Re-use, Reduce, Recycle……Consign, Swap, Donate
I thought about this while on my way to work this morning….not so much how to re-use, reduce, and recycle for a greener world, but more so how Consigning, swapping, and Donating of clothing have become such popular group activities.
Earlier this week, I received an invite from The Fashion Fights Poverty Organization (FFP) for a charity fundraiser which they are calling “New To You”. This event which will be held later this month in DC will allow attendees to swap clothing with one another, consign their gently used garments, or simply donate pieces to charity, as the only requisites for entry are a RSVP and at least one piece of clothing.
I used to be really wierd about sharing clothing with other people. I simply just liked to have my own things, which i had shopped for and bought. The thought of walking around in something that someone else had already worn, sweated in, and who-knows-what in just really creeped me out! That quickly changed in college, but didn’t really take a new meaning until I began visiting consignment and vintage shops in the city.

Thrift and Consignment Shopping
Earlier this spring, I fell in love and purchased the most beautiful pair of Fendi shoes at a vintage store in alphabet city. I did not hesitate at all to buy the shoes. No reservations came to mind about who had worn it, where they’d worn it to, and why the previous owner had parted with the them. The shoes were just a “must have”.
Since then, I have changed my perception of shopping in that it is no longer so much about a price ticket and the new-purchase-smell, but more so about making a statement and buying those “must-have” items that you just simply have to have no matter what.
